The Foundation

It was as early as 1918 that a residential school called Mahavir Brahmacharyashrama Gurukul was established at Karanja-lad (Dist. Washim) in the Vidarbha region of Maharshtra. In the similar line, a dire need of such an institution, the Marathwada region was always felt. In 1961, three veterans of the Jains viz. Param Pujaniya Samantabhadraji Maharaj, Param Pujaniya Aryanandiji Maharaj, and Brahmachari Ramachandraji met at Kumbhoj Bahubali (Dist. Kolhapur, Maharashtra) during the Chaumasa (Chaturmas) period, and this issue received their serious attention. Subsequently, many places were visited, but the final choice was Ellora, where the 1008 Shri Lord Parshvanatha's huge 16 feet tall and exquisite idol sculpted in Shaka 1156 ( 1234 AD.)

The way forward, on 9th of March 1962, around 1,500 Jain devotees from different walks of life gathered at Ellora, and unanimously announced the proposal for the foundation of this Gurukul in the august presence of Param Pujaniya 108 Shri Suparshva Sagaraji Maharaj. It was immediately followed by the foundation of this institute. The fateful day was June 7, 1962. On this day, Param Pujaniya 108, Shri Aryanandiji Maharaj was unanimously presided to grace this Gurukul. The occasion graced by the presence of Pandit Shri Jagmohan Lalji Shashtri (Katni, Madhya Pradesh). Initially, this Gurukul was started with 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Standard Classes, with total 67 Students and 4 Teachers.

Testimonials

VARDHAMAN RANDIVE
I could well brought up myself with the rich religious & spritual atmosphere of the Gurukul. It is very necessary for every Jain family to send at least one child to Gurukul, so that the children get to know about Jainism and they also become followers.
